Running Group 2013 - RACE DAY!

The week leading up to race day was a mix of slow days but a fast week.  I remember a few weeks back I was ready for race day.  I was ready to be done with waking up at 6am on Saturday to go running.  I was ready to have my Saturday morning back to spend time with my family.  Now wholly smokes I'm really doing it, I'm running a half marathon.

Training for a half marathon doesn't only effect me.  I've had a huge support group surrounding me.  My husband who was encouraging me to sign up at the beginning and all along the way to get going and get my miles done.  My children who have yelled "have a good run" as I'm stepping out the door.  My family and co-workers who have consistently inquired about my training and giving me encouragement and support.  Some were along the sidelines today cheering me on and I am eternally grateful.  And lastly having some pretty amazing running partners has been a blessing for me.  I sincerely don't know if I would have approached the starting line as prepared as I am today.  They have been my rock telling me to keep going when I wanted walk the first time I ran 7 miles.  They have told me to lace up those shoes when it was down pouring outside. And they have worked with me and my crazy schedule so we could get lunchtime and evening runs in.  I am in debt to them for their support.

We had about a half hour before the race started which really only felt like about 5 minutes.  We managed to get a few pictures in before heading to the starting line.

As I stepped off the curb into the crowd of people I looked around and absorbed some of the energy.  I fumbled with my IPod to make sure it was working and selected my Nike App to help me keep a good pace.  I looked around the crowd for familiar faces and it was go time.

See us on the far right?!?!

I think I was pretty quiet for the first couple of miles.  I know I was looking around at all the people in awhhh.  I remember looking at all the shirts from the different running groups.  But mostly I was thinking "am I really doing this?"  It wasn't until about the two-mile mark before I felt a little less claustrophobic.  Two miles is also where the first water station was. We flew right past a huge pack of runners who stopped for water and waved to Cassie's husband who was helping man the water station.  This is about the time my confidence started to rise and the hills started to approach.  We were cruising right up those hills and passing people.  Wow!  Those five months of training are going to start to pay off.  Cassie and I settled into a nice pace and before we knew it we were six miles in.  I remember Cassie and I talking about what a great run this is and how great we feel.  This was also the time the first marathoner came whizzing past us. All I can say is IMPRESSIVE!  We wound around neighborhoods I didn't even know existed.  We smiled and waved at all the people who came out their front doors to cheer us on.  We were having a really good run.

We finally came into a part of town that I was familiar with, but that also meant we were approaching the dreaded EAST SIDE HILL that we were most worried about.  I needed to get into my zone.  After running 9 miles and then go up a pretty good hill, I needed to dig deep.  We trained on this hill several times.  I knew where it slightly leveled off and I knew that it also kept going.  As Cassie and I took on this hill we both had the same mission... I didn't train for five months to walk up East side hill.  So many people stopped on this hill to walk, but not us.  We found our zone and kept on going.  We passed people and zig zagged up that hill.  Cassie and I didn't talk except for the occasional "how ya doing?" and "oh man!"  We knew once we made it up this hill we had friends ready to cheer us on and it was only a short 3 miles to the finish line.  It felt like forever but we were determined to not let the hill win and it didn't.

As we hit Capital Way we knew we were in the home stretch.  Cassie tells me that we needed to give it our all in the last mile.  In my mind I was going as fast as I could!  But somehow (with a little cursing at Cassie) I managed to pick up the pace.

We also knew that we would have lots of friends on the sidelines.  Seeing familiar faces was very emotional for me.  I had worked really hard to get to that point and having friends and family there to support me was amazing.  But I needed to keep it together.  Crying and running isn't a good combination.  It makes it really hard to breathe!

I spotted these little beauties along the sidelines.  So happy they saw me doing something totally out of my comfort zone.

Morgan was able to jump into the race with me to cross the finish line.  Amazingly, I was able to keep it together (for the most part) and not cry.

As I crossed the finish line I tried to absorbed what was going on around me.  I squeezed Morgan's hand and told her how happy I was, looked up at the clocks to try and see my time and tried not to trip over the timing bumps.  That's a lot for a brain that just ran 13 miles.

We were done and we did it without walking one bit.  I still don't know where the drive came from but it's apparently there deep down inside.  I will never say never again.  I may say "wholly smokes!" or "yikes!" but I won't say "no way."

Running Group 2013 - Week 14

Yes, I'm still going strong with running group. Just not so strong with posting updates.  This week was a significant milestone for me so I felt that I needed to share my experience.

12 miles. That's what faced me at week 14. Looking back to January, I refused to look too far ahead in the training packet. I only wanted to know what I needed to accomplish for the week I was in. I had to believe that if I followed the plan I would be prepared to run a half marathon.  Week 14 (12 miles) was too far away for me to think about. Well, yesterday was the day.  The route I didn't want to talk about. The route I didn't think I could do. The route to Ruddell road and back.

I decided to treat this day the same as any other day.  I got up before everyone else in the house. Got my running clothes on. Thought about which jacket to wear and decided on the one I always wear. Ate breakfast and headed for our starting point. I was just going to run.  Not think about the distance.  Not think about where I was going. Not think about possibly running 12 miles in the rain.  Not let the pain in my hip stop me.  I'm just going to run.

The morning was cold and brisk but not raining and there were patches of blue sky. I must say the weather was definitely a helper. I also tried something new.  Shot Bloks. Little gummy candies made to replenish some of the sugar levels in your body.  Running that far and for that long can deplete a lot out of you (imagine that). Not sure how my body would react, I was a little worried about eating them.  Turns out they worked great for me and I definitely noticed a difference.

The other training group members and water station folks are usual faces on Saturday mornings.  This Saturday morning we got a few surprise "drive-byes!" We were encouraged my our smiling babies and supportive husbands.  While running down the sidewalk we hear "MOMMY!!!"  It was my sweet little Brooke making sure I saw her and I sure did!  Seeing them cheer us on means so much.  I love that my girls see me being healthy. I love that they are excited to see me running. They don't know how far 12 miles is, or how worried I was to run it.  They just see me doing it, full steam ahead.

12 miles D.O.N.E.

Stats 12 miles, 2:18mins (BTW- I can't believe I can run for over two hours)

Father/Daughter Dance 2013

A daddy and his princess never gets old, right?  It was that time of year for the Father/Daughter Dance.  As you might remember, Casey and Morgan went to the dance last year too.  Morgan loves to be escorted by her daddy on a date night.  If you can't tell, Casey is glowing with pride for his little girl.

The day was a pretty mellow day for us.  She didn't want to have her nails done and I was planning on doing her for the night.  However, after a failed practice run, I decided to let the professionals take over.  We ordered a corsage and boutonniere for the night.  Casey let her pick where she wanted to go for dinner; she chose Lemon Grass again.  This restaurant may become their yearly tradition.

Before Daddy got home, we did a few pictures of Morgan by herself.

Here is a similar picture from last year.  It's just amazing what a difference a year makes.  Yikes!

And then of course we needed some pictures with everyone all dressed up.

Brooke wasn't really aware of what day it was or that her Daddy and Sissy where going on a date.  But she didn't hesitate to jump in for a picture anyways.

Needless to say, once she realized they were leaving the house without her, the waterworks started.  I don't know if he'll be able to get away with taking only one princess next year.

It was another successful evening with good food, dancing and winning a raffle basket.  She was a very happy girl!

Creative Day

Every few weeks Morgan has Creative Week at ballet.  During Creative Week, she can wear whatever she wants.  Some weeks Morgan has chosen to wear one of her ballet costumes, dress up clothes or just a regular tutu.  This week she decided pajamas would be great.  In addition to wearing their choice of outfits, the parents get to come and watch the last few minutes of class.

Here's a video of what they have been working on recently in class.  Morgan is on the left in the blue shirt and striped pants.

Here's a video of freestyle dance.  They do whatever the music inspires them to do. Poor Ellie in the middle was having an off night.  I guess the girls thought if they danced around her, it might inspire her to join the group.

ENJOY!

Running Group 2013 - Week 4

Gearing up to run this week has been a bit challenging.  I haven't really been in the mood.  Lucky for me I have a running partner at work.  It helps to have that standing commitment and knowing someone is waiting on you.  We did two runs this week one hilly 4+ miles on Tuesday (in between rain storms) and another 3 miles.  After running, I felt a sense of accomplishment and glad I pushed myself to go.

Our long run this week was SEVEN miles.  When I talked to my trainer about it, she asked how I felt about running seven miles.  Basically, I was trying not to think about it.  I knew I ran six, two weeks before and once I find my zone, I'm good.

My legs were very tired for basically the first two miles, but then I found my zone and was ok, not great, but ok.  The problem with this route was we ran past our starting point and had to run the lake which was another 1.5 miles.  I totally wanted to stop and walk, but luckily for me, my running partner pushed me through.

One of the greatest things I saw this morning were all the high school kids running.  It makes me so happy to see them out and being active.  It's such a great sight!

Here's a picture of me afterwards. Seven miles D-O-N-E with NO walking!

Stats:  7 Miles, 1 hr, 25 mins.

Running Group 2013 - Week 3

This week my friend posted a picture on Facebook of her husband.  This picture has stuck with me all week.

Approximately 6 years ago he was in Iraq and injured by a roadside bomb.  He lost part of his leg and his world changed completely.  We all know he could have gone in two different directions in his life.  Fortunately, he chose to power through and be a successful triathlete.  He has several prosthetics to chose from and he gets up everyday and faces his challenges head on.  I am proud to call him and his wife my friends.

You know how you sometimes tend to be drawn to stories that are relevant to your life at a particular time?  The trend for me was "life is too short."  I am not injured, I don't have severe pain when I run (only minimal) and running agrees with my body.  I don't have to like it, but I do like the way I feel when I'm done.  I like looking back and thinking "I just ran Barnes hill" well, I mostly ran it.  Running isn't easy and my legs feel heavy but I just keep going.

My story this week is I run because I can....

Stats:  5 miles 62 minutes (very hilly route)

Running Group 2013 - Week 2

As I woke up and prepared for my six-mile run, all I could think about was how sore my legs are from my hilly run on Thursday.  In addition, the Wednesday workout definitely made the Thursday lunchtime run a little challenging.  It is like a spiral effect.  The past few weeks my number of days running has been cut back.  However, on the days I do run, my distance has increased.  In a way, I feel like I'm getting a little break.  Besides having tired legs, the new routine seems to be working.

One of my major challenges during my runs has been headphones.  I've been using the ones that came with my iPod, however, they aren't really made for running and this week I decided enough was enough. So I went on a hunt for headphones. Oh Lordy, are there a lot of options! I was determined not to spend a ton of money but felt overwhelmed with all the styles. I decided on these little guys for $29.99. Considering I saw some for over $100 I was satisfied with my decision. The best news is, they worked perfectly on my run today.

Today's run was a the perfect amount of hills.  I was a little intimidated by the distance and was convinced her calculations were wrong. I thought for sure it was farther than six miles. Turns out she was right.  I was able to run all but about one minute on this route.

Stats: 6 miles, 1hr, 12mins
